Some people may think of a shelter as a SAFE PLACE. But many rural and county shelters are HELL on Earth for the poor animals who find themselves there.

Thousands of animals are killed every day in this country because there are not enough homes for them all. Without mandatory spay/neuter laws, animals "do what they do" and more and more are left at, taken to or dumped into shelters that just don't have the room or resources to take care of them all.

Euthanasia remains the only "legal" way to solve the problem of pet overpopulation. But even that word, may make you think of a peaceful release from life. That is hardly the case in many  county and rural shelters around the country.

Do you know what HEARTSTICKING means? A poison-filled syringe is jabbed through an animal's chest wall. The needle punctures layers of nerves on the way to the heart.

But what about when it is not done right, or done by uncaring and unfeeling shelter workers? One kennel worker, who quit in disgust said, "It was pretty ugly. I think I did not do it the right way. The dog was still breathing, kind of shallow. He (the supervisor) said 'OK, put him in the freezer. If he doesn't die from the blue juice, he'll die from the freezer."

Many states are banning this cruel form of euthanizing animals, but sadly, it is still done in too many places. Go to The Petition Site and search "heart stick" and sign the petition to ban this horrible form of killing.

The American Veterinary Medical Association guidelines on euthanasia advise against heart stick, known medically as intracardiac injection, on animals that are awake.

The AVMA says "Intracardiac injection is acceptable only when performed on heavily sedated, anesthetized or comatose animals, owing to the difficulty and unpredictability of performing the injection accurately."
