- About Our Rehome Service

Our Oodles of Doodles Rehome Service was started in 2010 after seeing more and more beautiful poodles and doodles appearing on Craigslist in “Free to a Good Home” ads.  While Craigslist says it does not support these ads, they do allow them if the rehomer says, “Rehome Fee” in the advertisements.  As a group, we were sending emails to the rehomers emails letting them know about the horrific things that could happen to these dogs if they were given over to “just anyone.”

We believe that keeping the dogs in their home is better for the dog than moving him or her from home to foster home, then to adoptive home in a short time, so we ask rehomers, if possible, to keep the dog in the home for the time it takes to find the perfect home, where he or she feels safe.

While we as a rescue cannot possibly take every dog into our rescue program (no rescue possibly can), we decided to try to help families needing to rehome their poodle or doodle by offering a free ad on our website and helping them pick the best applicant from the applications that come in.

Rehomers are asked to fill out a Rehomer Application, where they are asked about the temperament and condition of the dog. Additionally, they are asked if the dog(s) are spayed/neutered and up to date on all shots and if needed, Oodles of Doodles, Inc.  will help them achieve this, to ensure no intact dogs are rehomed, adding to the overpopulation in our nation’s shelters. Oodles of Doodles will be reimbursed after the dog is successfully placed in a new adoptive home.

The dog is then listed and shown to adopters on our websites, in the region the dog is in. Applications are taken, screened and if matches the needs of the dog and what the Rehoming family is looking for, they are forwarded to the family to look over and call.

Oodles of Doodles is there to lend support, give advice and help the family as needed. These dogs are not in our rescue program, but they are treated as though they are. Numerous emailing back and forth, handholding and aid might occur and we are there when asked and needed.

All rehomers are asked to call references, especially the vet reference, do a home visit and see the interaction between the potential adopters and the dog and to use their hearts before deciding who is best to adopt their dog and love him or her for the rest of their lives, which is the ultimate goal of doing this.

Once the home is found, the adoptive family is asked to sign a "Owner Rehome Assistance Adoption Contract," to ensure the new adoptive family has the best interests of the dog at heart for the rest of their lives and if for any reason they, too cannot keep the dog, they contact Oodles of Doodles, Inc. and the former owners.

Oodles of Doodles, Inc. does not charge rehomers for this service but does ask for a donation after the dog is adopted. This donation is at the discretion of the Rehoming family and is used solely to keep our service and website free in the future, so that other families can use it successfully, anonymously and safely.

We have been able to help many families, who for various reasons, needed to rehome their dog. We have helped a couple responsible breeders to rehome their breeding dogs and older puppies and we have helped by taking several dogs into our own rescue program and recommended a few to other rescues. We have helped to keep dogs off of Craigslist and out of the hands of the unscrupulous, which was our goal all along. We are proud of that.
