The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asks that suspected or confirmed cases of Salmonella infection be reported to determine whether an animal is infected with the outbreak strain, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. This can be done by contacting a regional Food and Drug Administration consumer complaint coordinator. Australia Reporting Irradiation Probable Cause
In 2008, Orijen Pet Food was linked to the illness or death of an estimated 60 cats in Australia. More news from Australia reports that as suspected, the required irradiation of pet foods imported in the country could be the cause.

One theory is that gamma radiation, which reduces the food's nutritional value, destroys vitamin A, and the vitamin deficiency causes the nervous system problems. Independent tests on the irradiated food have found "substantial reductions in vitamin A levels" and increased "production of oxidative by-products". http://www.theherald.com.au/news/local/news/general/irradiation-foo...

CINCINNATI, July 30, 2010 –
The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) (NYSE:PG) is voluntarily expanding its recall to include veterinary and some specialized dry pet food as a precautionary measure because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. No salmonella-related illnesses have been reported.

Consumers who have purchased the specific dry pet foods listed should discard them. People handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Dog Food, Cat Food Recalled in 19 States

Recall Due to Toxin in Pet Pride, Old Yeller, and Kroger Brands at Kroger-Owned Stores

Dec. 20, 2010 -- Kroger is recalling some of its private brands of dogand cat food because they may contain aflatoxin, a potentially deadly mold by-product.

The recall includes various Pet Pride, Old Yeller, and Kroger brands sold at Kroger and Kroger-owned stores in 19 states.

Aflatoxins can cause potentially fatal liver damage in dogs and cats. Earlysymptoms of aflatoxin poisoning include lethargy, loss of appetite, and vomiting. Bloody or tarry stools are often noted, and affected pets may develop orange-colored urine and jaundice (yellowing of the eyes, gums, and non-pigmented skin).

The severity of illness depends on the dose of aflatoxin and the length of time the animal received tainted food.

Signs of illness may start within a few days or take several weeks to appear. Owners of dogs and cats that have eaten the recalled products should have their pets examined by a veterinarian, who may order blood tests to check for liver damage.

Kroger sold the dog and cat foods at Kroger stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The recalled pet foods also were sold at Dillons and Gerbes stores in Kansas and Missouri; Baker's stores in Nebraska; Food 4 Less stores in Nebraska, Illinois, and Indiana; and Jay C, Hilander, Owen's, Pay Less, and Scott's stores in Illinois and Indiana.

Stores not included in the recall are the Kroger-operated Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Fry's, King Soopers, Smith's, QFC, City Market, Foods Co., and Food 4 Less stores in California and Nevada.
