Chicken Jerky Dog Treats: An FDA Update

Last week, we reported on a mysterious kidney ailment occurring in Australian dogs, which appeared to be linked to Kramar brand chicken jerky dog treats. Kramar announced a precautionary recall of the treats, even though no one has yet been able to determine the exact cause of the ailment.

The chicken jerky treats were manufactured in China.

In our report, we mentioned that a similar problem had arisen in the United States in 2007, and that FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine had issued a warning to pet owners. As in the Australian situation, the treats were imported from China, and the contaminant that triggered the kidney symptoms could not be found.

Today, the Center for Veterinary Medicine has issued a new Preliminary Animal Health Notification on this same problem. According to CVM, the agency has continued to receive complaints about pet illnesses linked to chicken jerky treats. Unfortunately, CVM appears to be no closer to solving the mystery.

CVM has issued this new warning to alert pet owners who choose to give these treats to their dogs to watch for the development of any of the following symptoms, which may appear hours or days after a dog has eaten these treats. Small dogs appear to be especially susceptible.

* decreased appetite (dog may continue to eat the treat but refuse usual food)

* decreased activity level

* vomiting

* diarrhea - sometimes with blood

* increased water consumption and/or increased urination

A dog that displays any of these symptoms after having eaten chicken jerky treats should be seen by a veterinarian if the symptoms are severe or if they persist longer than 24 hours.

FDA is continuing its investigation into possible chemical or microbiological contaminants in the chicken jerky treats. The agency urges dog owners and veterinarians to report any pet food- associated illnesses to the FDA Consumer Coordinator in their state.

Another chicken jerky treat warning taken from the ILA website. This is not in the U.S. but for our Australian members as well as for those that follow such things regardless of geographical location I wanted to share:

KRAMAR PULLS DOGFOOD AFTER POISON REPORT

The importer of a Chinese-made chicken dog treat has today voluntarily recalled the product, after reports of kidney damaging illnesses in dogs around Australia. The company KraMar has withdrawn Supa Naturals Chicken breast strips, which it says is one of Australia's highest selling dog snacks. A statement issued by KraMar says the withdrawal is a precaution.

PS I just a day ago saw chicken jerky treat made in china on the shelves of a local health food store. I did share of the warnings on the FDA site of which they had no idea and were grateful for the information.

This really shouldn't surprise anyone anymore. Their products are: Pedigree, Whole Meats, Cesar, The Good Life Recipie, Sheba and Whiskas. Don't use these items. It's as simple as that.

Also Wegman's, Ol' Roy, and a lot of other names I'm unfamiliar with, a lot of them store brands. Walmart's products, in particular, seem to be heavily involved.

I am not surprised anymore by any of this. It seems every supermarket brand and some premium brand has had some type of problem in the past few years. Profits outweigh anything, And now with the economy tanking and more people not buying their products these companies, hopefully, will go out of business or, sadly, do an even worse job of making dogfood. When It is no longer profitable for them is when they will stop, not before. If every dog lover tells another dog lover the truth about rendering plants and melmine laced dogfood, WE CAN SAVE THE WORLD, HAA HAA. Sorry, we can at least save some of the dogs of the world.

FDA’s at it again; Update on Breathies Dog/Cat Treats Salmonella Report

The FDA listed Dogswell/Catswell Breathies Treats on a late December 2008 Import Refusal List, citing the treats tested positive for Salmonella. However, Dogswell CEO Marco Giannini has provided evidence that the treats did not test positive for Salmonella. It appears the FDA is up to manipulative games again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday (1/6/08) TruthaboutPetFood reported that on the December 2008 Import Refusal List, Dogswell/Catswell Breathies Chicken Treats were refused entry into the US due to salmonella contamination. There appeared to be clear cut evidence that the FDA refused admission into the U.S. a shipment of Breathies Chicken Treats imported from China. The refusal date listed on the FDA document was 12/18/08; charge for refusal listed Salmonella.

Today I was contacted by Dogswell CEO Marco Giannini, who provided 'the rest of the story', along with laboratory testing results proving his product tested free of Salmonella. The shipment of chicken treats in question were originally received by Dogswell in late August 2008. Mr. Giannini reports the FDA instructed Dogswell to hold the product in their warehouse and wait for results of FDA testing. He states "We have held the product and for a fact will tell you that all 49 cases of that lot are sitting in our warehouse. We were awaiting a response from our position with the FDA when this was exploded onto us."

The FDA, without providing Dogswell results from FDA testing, without any notice, listed this shipment of Breathies Chicken Treats on an Import Refusal List four months after they had already been received into the U.S.

To see for yourself, Mr. Giannini provided the laboratory testing of the August shipment of chicken treats. Click here to read the PDF.

Note the FDA Entry Number - AGL-0014286-0 - matches the number on the FDA Import Refusal document. http://www.fda.gov/ora/oasis/12/ora_oasis_i_72.html

Furthermore, note that the shipment of treats were received in late August and promptly tested in early September. Yet the FDA reported these treats were refused on December 18, 2008.

Last year, the FDA cost tomato farmers millions of dollars by mistakenly accusing them to be the source of Salmonella contamination. There are on-going reports of health product companies that are virtually held captive by FDA inspectors, forced to pay thousands of dollars TO the FDA. http://www.naturalnews.com/024567.html And…we have undeniable evidence that the FDA itself is violating Federal law. http://www.truthaboutpetfood.com/articles/137/1/Undeniable-Proof-th...

Who is running this country?

Most pet owners would not agree with Dogswell/Catswell's stance on importing chicken treats from China. Mr. Giannini reported "We don't have a position as to where it comes from, as long as it is humanely processed, it is safe and healthy for the dogs and cats that eat the foods." Mr. Giannini received an 'ear full' on this topic from me via email. You play with fire long enough, you are going to get burned. However, what the FDA did to this company is inexcusable. The FDA has such incredible power to destroy a business, destroy families, destroy lives in the blink of an eye and NO ONE is holding them accountable.

Within a few days the United States will have a new Commander in Chief, a new administration; a fresh start. We all hope the fresh start includes a complete makeover of the FDA. The current one isn't working.

Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,

Susan Thixton

Incompetance IS probably the number one reason. But it has been hinted at in other places that the FDA is supported by, lobbied by and in cahoots with Big Manufacturing including Commercial Dogfood Companies. There has even been suggestions of the FDA KNOWING about the 2007 recalls BEFORE they were made public.

So what conclusion can we draw????? Just more FOOD FOR THOUGHT!
