There are also transport costs associated with adopting out of state. I brought Sloan from WVA to FL, and transport alone was almost $300. It is not cheaper to adopt from out of state! Plus you run the risk of not meeting the dog first. I was lucky with Sloan, but you just never know if it will be the right dog for you.

The area or only adopt within a state, is common. It's hard to conduct home checks from afar, or meet the family, if it's too far away. Most rescues have this sort of rule. Many shelters in the South only adopt to county residents. There is much more to consider than just cost. That's why it is important to read the Petfinder ad as to what the rescue or shelter is looking for.

When I say dirt cheap I mean under $300 including immunizations/neuter and grooming.

Thanks for the insight

Nothing is dirt cheap. We get dogs from down South much cheaper than what you may pay up here, but then we need to do the vetting. Many shelters do not do vetting or will do it once the dog is tagged by a rescue or adopted. Either way, you are going to get what you pay for. Good rescues, spay/neuter the dog, which many times they are not. If found as a stray, there is no history, so HW testing needs to be done and rabies and other vaccinations need to be done, too. Most shelter dogs need a grooming, flea bath and all mine are wormed before they come up as worms are very common in the South, too. It's a lot to consider when you say "dirt cheap" out of state. What do you need to add on in the vetting and grooming you will have to do?

I just contacted  Buffalo Pug & Small Breed Rescue Inc about Lance the cute poodle mix and she said they only adopt within a 200 mile radius! What a bummer

I guess I am just looking to hear what other people's experiences were like? I feel like out of State adoptions are dirt cheap?

It probably depends on the distance and if the rescue has the ability to do home checks with another group. Shelters will usually require you to go to the shelter directly, as will most rescues, too. Can you give us a bit more detail as to what you are thinking?
