"Jenn, a wireless fence is not 100% reliable, especially with a full-on run. They will be through and on the other side when the zap kicks in. I would never count on an e-fence to contain a dog who really wants to get out. Since he is digging out,…"

Overwhelmed

Hello. I am feeling overwhelmed today and am hoping to find some new ideas. We adopted a 3 month old Golden Doodle from craigslist (I see that is not accepted by this group, but please don't blast me on it). Admittedly, I did not do enough research into Doodles. At 80 pounds, Murphy is about 15 pounds bigger than I expected. He is very loving and thinks he is a lap dog. In closed quarters, he is a good playmate for our 20 pound miniature schnauzer, Renzi. However, outside, Murphy runs full…See More

Are you now involved in Rescue? If so how?
We adopted our three last dogs, but none have been through a breed Rescue. One was word of mouth and Renzi and Murphy were off of craigslist. I'm here looking for some help. While he doesn't really shed or have dander that bothers our allergies, the amount of dirt he brings into our house has more than quadrupled, and it does affect our allergies. Murphy also constantly digs out of the yard (we have a large fenced yard). We have a very busy road across a small creek at the back of the property. Because Murphy chews up things (like the rug) and counter cruises, we can't leave him unsuperivsed in most of the house. We have a large laundry/mud room where he and Renzi are gated when alone. With such bad allergies, I am feeling very exhausted and overwhelmed trying to keep up with Murphy. For example, this afternoon, he dug under the fence again, is covered in burrs, and rolled in something (he likes feces and dead birds). My son has scouts and soccer this afternoon/evening, and my husband isn't home until after the kids' bed time. On a daily basis, there are few of our friends who can tolerate Murphy's energy. I've struggled with what to do for a long time now. I know that some of Murphy's puppy behavoir should lessen within a year or so. The biggest issues are our allergies, his constant drive to escape the fenced yard, and his roughness with Renzi. I hate to be the third family to rehome him, but some days it's more than I have energy and time for. What can you suggest? Thanks.

Jenn, I just left a message in the discussion you started. You have come to the right place and we will help all we can. Murphy is still very young and should be easy to train, you need to distract him with positive to change the negative. Just putting him in a separate room won't change the behavior. Give him something else to do while in there. A marrow bone to chew on, a stuffed kong or bully stick might satisify his chewing. Stop his digging, also by giving him something else to do. Have the kids play fetch with him until he is worn out, take him running, etc. We are here if you need us, just ask.
