There are recipes in the Homecooking and Recipe File above and I have answered the vacs discussion and so has Karen. We try to keep topics within discussions so that others who may be looking for a particular subject can find them better. We haven't been too active on some of these discussions for awhile, as we have been very busy with the rescue. I would love it if you went into some of the discussions and comment away. I get a notification on any posts you might make in them, as will you if you choose to "Follow" any discussion you may be interested in. If you click on "View All" right about this Comment Wall, you will see all the Food Discussions and it is the same in all the groups.

Read some of the discussions above. Before commercial dogfood, dogs ate scraps, hunted and caught their food. It was fresh meat, bone and veggies. Dogs lived 18, 20+ years. I was scared at first because of all the brainwashing done by BIG DF (dogfood) to convince us that "complete and balanced" is better. It's not. Especially when complete means things we shouldn't be feeding in the first place. It's not that difficult and keeping it simple makes it easy. I cook for four of my own and a foster when here.

Supplementing with the kibble, a daily vitamin, yogurt here and there, pumpkin and brown rice is way healthier than anything Commercial DF can come up with.

Ok Lynne- you may have made me a believer-we lost our other schnauzer at a young age of 9 from acute pancreatitis- I don't ever want to see that again---what should I have done for Lizzy at 2 yrs old 1/28 to protect her but not hurt her for the future?

I think their life span is actually less, now. With higher incidences of cancers, skin allergies and liver and kidney troubles, I am really beginning to believe it is the crap in the food (and the vaccines). Tie it together and it might be the one two punch that is killing our dogs at way too young an age. I have been homecooking for three years now and while it's hard to tell in my younger doodles, my real truth is my 10 year old Bijon. When he was my mother's dog, he always had tear stains and smelly ears and was arthritic in his hind legs. He ate Beneful or Mighty Dog canned for years.

When I inherited him, he went onto homecooking and he has NONE of those aliments...ever for three years now. He is like a young dog again. Plus, all his titers have come back in high levels and he has not had a vac except for Rabies in three years.

All my fosters also get homecooked and Premium Kibble as soon as they come to me. Usually they come with dull coats and eyes and within a few days I notice a change in their skin and their coats shine up.

Frozen Marrow bones here, too and salmon oil. It's great to see more people taking charge of their dogs diet.

The only thing I get concerned about is a balance in nutrition from doing it myself--If Innova or a comparible food works, it takes the stress from me makin.g sure she has all that she needs. Not lazy, just very short on time

Hi All .... this is my first post ..... and its quite fitting because I am very particular about what my Doodle - Lily eats. She is now 6 .... and I have followed, what I think, has been a great food regime.

First off .. I mix two of the higher quality dog foods .... (keeps lily more interested) .... Canidea is the constant .... and then every other month .. I will mix in Innova or Evangers ......

When lily was a puppy ... she also liked canned food (Must be served like a TV dinner .... dry on one side ..canned on the other)... for a long time I used Merrick Gourmet Canned Dog Food and then the Evangers ......

However in the last year she basically decided she didnt like the canned foods ....so I started cooking for her. I sometimes will make a beef roast in my crock pot ..... (makes at least a weeks worth of wet food) ..... or boil a pack of chicken thighs (I cook it long enough that the chicken just falls off the bone) .....and other meats ...

-- I also, by the way (smile) .... used to only give Lily raw/frozen marrow bones to chew .....and she has beautiful white teeth. Unfortunately ... she started to burry these raw gross bones in my bedding .... so she doesnt get them anymore ...


In my mind ...... most dog foods are probably the reason why, as a species, canines havent made much progress in terms of life span.

Glad to hear that we are giving the GOOD food----I'm talking about GMA or Today show=spent 21 yrs intv-no guarantees but I may still have a contact or two...........
