Pet Ailment Statistics

DVM360.com recently reported on the most common clinical conditions in dogs and cats in 2009; as released by Veterinary Pet Insurance. It’s terrible to see how many of these conditions could be related to pet food.

The DVM360.com article states the most common ailment is dogs was an ear infection. VPI reported nearly 68,000 claims at an average cost of $100.00 per visit in 2009. For cats, the most common ailment in 2009 was lower urinary tract disease with 3,700 claims averaging $260.00 per visit. http://veterinarynews.dvm360.com/dvm/Veterinary+news/VPI-releases-m...

Both of these health conditions could be directly connected to inferior pet food.

Here is the list VPI reported as the top ten conditions for 2009.

Top conditions in dogs
1. Ear infection
2. Skin allergy
3. Skin infection, or hot spots
4. Gastritis, or vomiting
5. Enteritis, or diarrhea
6. Bladder infection
7. Arthritis
8. Soft tissue trauma
9. Noncancerous tumor
10. Eye infection

Top conditions in cats
1. Lower urinary tract disease
2. Gastritis, or vomiting
3. Chronic renal failure
4. Hyperthyroidism
5. Diabetes
6. Enteritis, or diarrhea
7. Skin allergy
8. Periodontitis, or dental disease
9. Ear infection
10. Eye infection

Now, here’s the list again. Highlighted in red are health conditions that could easily be the result of an inferior pet food or contaminated pet food.

Don’t let your pet become a statistic for the most common health conditions for 2010; feed only high quality pet foods and treats (human grade meat, no by-products, no animal fat, no meat and bone meal, minimal grains, no chemical preservatives, no dyes, no Chinese imports).

Funny how 7 out of the top 10 ailments in dogs can be food related. Makes you think???

It is at the very least a list of things that if you are experiencing any of them, you could look first at the food and switch to a premium grade food and see if it clears up. At least it would be a easy, cheap solution if it is the food. I know with Magic, she had chronic ear infections. We spent many years, dollars and anguish back and forth to the vet. Ear solutions, antibiotics, ear cleanings and time and money and he never connected us to the food. I didn't know then...I do now. It's just amazing that the number one ailment is ear infections.

I, of course, know you are right but the average Joe Blow who doesn't have a clue might look at a simple, clear list like this and at least might make a connection between bad food and an ailment that has been plaguing their dog. When I was Mrs. Joe Blow, like I said, I had no clue. Allergies may be a different animal but a list like this is a place to start. Magic's vet never connected the food. I never connected the food.

You are also right that anything could be a result of bad food. I only know that a chronic problem might or might not be food, even a skin issue and if you change the food to a quality food and the problem still persists, then you go for other testing.

Her conclusion is right on as far as I believe.
