SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt --Poodle Rescue of Vermont, a local dog rescue squad, flew in two rescue poodles Christmas Eve. Poodles Rex from Massachusetts and Elmo from Maryland were placed in foster homes.
Terri Gerrard of the rescue group got her only Christmas wish as she greeted the dogs.
"It's very confusing for them to be given up by their families, so it's important to put them in a foster home," Gerrard said.
Gerrard said it all started a couple of weeks ago when a rescue squad in Massachusetts called saying owners could no longer care for both dogs. With the help of another group called Operation Rescue both were flown in. If the dogs weren't taken in by two Vermont families, they would have a much different story.
"If you take your dog to a shelter in a metropolitan area, they have 48 to 72 hours before they're put to sleep," Gerrard said.
Rex's foster mom, Cheryl Heppner, said getting the poodle was the best Christmas present.
"He's so adorable. He reminds me of my dog growing up," Heppner said.
Both poodles are available for adoption. For more information visit http://www.poodlerescuevt.org.
